FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May
21, 2007 SCAM
ALERT: NCUA Official Notification Several
local residents have recently received an email message (as seen below) asking for
credit union members to immediately activate a security measure
using their Social Security Number (SSN) and Credit/Debit PIN
number. This email
message is what we commonly refer to as a “phishing scam”
because the one sending the message is trying to get your
personal information to commit fraud.
If you have received this message or one like it asking for
your personal information including name, address, social security
number, bank account numbers, passwords, or personal financial
information delete the message immediately.
Often these emails will prompt you to click on a link which
will take you to a website and then ask for this sensitive
personal information. Do
not click on any link associated with this message and delete the
message immediately. Always
guard your personal information and NEVER give your social
security number, bank account information, or personal financial
information to those who have initiated
contact with you requesting it. Dear
Credit Union Member, This
notice informs you that your Credit Union bank has joined our
Federal Credit Union (FCU) network.
For both our and your security, we are asking you to
activate your account on our database.
After activation you can login on our system with you SSN
and your Credit/Debit PIN number.
You
must visit the National Credit Union Administration activation
page and fill in the form to activate your account: *******phishing
website********* In
accordance with NCUA User Agreement, you can use your online
account in 24 hours after activation.
We thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Please understand that this is a security measure intended
to help protect you and your account. Sincerely, NCUA
Account Review Department “I
want to continue to remind residents to be vigilant in protecting
their personal information” states Sheriff Haddock.
“While it may sound like the same warning you have heard
time and time again, we put this information out for the simple
fact that we continuously have reports of local residents giving
out personal information and being victimized by these same types
of scams. Those who
have become victims of this kind of scam not only have immediate
financial consequences, but year after year have to deal with
identity theft issues.”
If you believe you might be a victim of a identity theft or have recently given your personal information out to anyone who called, sent you a letter, or emailed you requesting it, please contact the Washington County Sheriff’s Office immediately at 638-6111. |
