FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Burglary Arrest

On Thursday, February 22, 2006 a home in the Nearing Hills area in Chipley was burglarized.  Items taken in the burglary included a gaming system.  Corey Crosby, 18 year old white male, has been charged in the theft with dealing in stolen property, a second degree felony.

Locally, burglary reports have increased significantly in Washington County , as well as in surrounding counties.  While investigators are aggressively pursuing all leads, the Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to please report any suspicious vehicles that are parked in driveways or along roadways near homes, where you would not normally expect them be seen. Nationally, most residential burglaries (over 60%) took place during the day, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.  65% of all burglaries were by forced entry, 28% were by unlawful entry with no force door or windows were left unlocked.  7% were reported as an attempted forcible entry, but when entry was made - the suspect gave up or was frightened off.  Washington County Sheriff’s office would like to offer the following tips which might keep you from becoming a victim of a burglary:

1.       Keep all doors and windows closed and securely fastened.

2.      Secure sliding glass doors.

3.      Always lock the door to an attached garage.

4.      Create the illusion that you are home.

5.      Keep the perimeter of your home well lighted.

6.      Never leave clues that you are away on a trip.

7.      Keep some shades and blinds up and curtains open to maintain a normal, everyday appearance in your residence.

8.      Never leave a message on your telephone answering machine telling people that you are away from home.

9.      Keep shrubbery trimmed away from entrances and walkways.

10. Organize a community watch program to protect your neighborhood. An alert community is a safe community.
